Fanfiction's losing their enjoyment value?

Fanfiction.net seems to being losing everything it's work so hard to gain. Everything I read seems to be the same BS story, it is very, very, VERY, irritating.

Agree or Disagree? Give Reasons.

I can agree with some of those reasons, but really, who has the time to sit around and search tirelessly for HOURS, and find nothing but some cheap Romeo & Juliette rip-off, and anything that may even have the possibility of being enjoyable the writers STOPS writing because the sum of people who read them is about 3.

I'm to lazy to sift through fanfictions for hours, plus I don't have much opportunity to do it. BUT the ones that I have read that are good are usually old, as in the writer gave up on them sometime last year. Why is it that all of the good ones are never updated?! ALthough, I do read crappy ones on occasion just because I'm bored and it's a good source of entertainment, especially if it's a crappy FUNNY one. Crappy romantic/serious ones just drain my life force until I feel dead inside...

I agree I used to be able to go through a few fanfics nd find wat im lookin for. But now i got to go through like the whole page of them nd more.i find one that looks kinda good then it comes out suck nd me frustrated on wasting time.but i maybe my criteria has jus narrowed. I think going into the stories from authors of ur favorite fan fiction is the best way to go cuz they already gotten ur enjoyment from their other stories.

p.s Why does Rukia keep getting pregnant when i read ichiruki fanfic, thats jus...jus i don't know wat to say, but it's aggravating

Woah! Woah! Woah!

I certainly disagree - I don't know what floats your boat (if that's the right expression) - but I still find those little gems, which make it hard to concentrate on work instead of reading them through in one go.

It is hard, and probably will always be, to find high quality fan fiction - most stuff there is crap, and you have to really look through lots of that to find the good stuff.

But! As for reasons why I disagree:

These guys produce high quality writing, certainly up to par with some books you actually have to pay for.

End of rant.

Okay, let's try to use this as a conversation site :-)

I got a bit angry, since you talked about the quality of writing, and I thought that some writers simply didn't deserve that critique. However you are right, sifting through the tons of crap is tiresome and I only occasionally do it.

So here's how I do it.

  1. Set it to show only complete 10.000+ words (or even more) entries.
  2. Only pick those with a reasonable number of reviews.
  3. Ignore anything with a stupid summary. (smth. like: LOL I suck@sumarry - please R&R)
  4. If the first few paragraphs don't pick my interest I still ignore it.

That's one way to go about tuning out the fanfiction-noise (and possibly miss a few ...). And it works better if you don't expect to find something :-).

If there was some kind of channel which would provide a good selection of fanfiction I would subscribe. Apart from the fanfic recommendations over at tvtropes I haven't found anything though.

Ideas? Recommendations? Anyone volunteering to make a best/fav fan fiction post/blog?

I agree. I mean im sure there are some good fanfictions out there but who realy has the time to look for them. ya know? I personaly don't write fan fictions because i dont want to completely kill the main idea of the original story.

I'm not really into fan fiction, but I gotta hand it to the people that write it: they are passionate about their work. To go and post your writing about said series for all to criticize takes a lot. However... I don't read it nor do I like it.

I think we all have our own fan fiction, be it written or just day dreams. In that regard, if is difficult to like fan fiction because I have my own narrative for, say the end of Cowboy Bebop. Some people think it just ends, while others believe that it continues on and the ending was misleading. Either way, you can't please a lot of people with fan fiction because it is usually a stopgap for an underdeveloped or untouched subject.

My other problem with fan fiction is that I never felt it to be original. After all is said and done, you often aren't bringing in anything new to the story. Even the Expanded Universe of Star Wars is like that (and therefore crap), with the exception of Shadows of the Empire. If you have all of this drive and creative energy, why not make something new?

Is it possible that fan fiction has stayed the same while you've just matured?

Highly agree.

And even then, most of what I read ends up to be the same relationship pairings or someone has to throw Edward Cullen into it. -____-

Not kidding.

Ok, now that I do (sort of) have time to read fanfictions, I found some good-ish ones. The first one I read was ok, but not that well-written. Then there was one that was EXTREMELY well-written, but I wasn't interested in the storyline. Now I am happily waiting for the next chapter in an awesome fanfic that I am very much enjoying while reading a slightly less well-written but still awesome fanfiction. AND it was all on the first page. I'm quite content right now :)
