Oh, Hey, Why Not: The Official Whaaaa? Anime Newbie Thread

So after my painfully inept appearance on the podcast, I figured it might be a sound idea to get you guys, the OtakuPride faithful, to help those of us who are both intimidated and clueless about what's out there jump in and geek out all proper-like.

Hence, this thread.

This is place for those of us too chicken-shit to admit we're clueless about what's hot in animation to open up the floor to you, the ones that do know what's going on, to help school us on all that is awesome.

I'll open the floor with basic preferences: I am a huge fan of cyberpunk stuff, so obviously Ghost in the Shell has been a staple since the original movie hit. If you guys have something that can tickle my lust for well-fleshed-out visions of the future and some neat-o characters mixed in, I'm all for it. Shirow's stuff (i.e. Appleseed) is obviously pretty well known to me, so I'm hoping for something that captures the whole futuristic, detailed vision of a possible continuation of existing technology. The more it shows off neon-lit cities and sexy future tech, the better. Ideally, I'd like some cyber-noir to really tickle my imagination/interest.

As was probably made (painfully) obvious, I'm a huuuuge fan of Cowboy Bebop (mainly because they helped build up the smallish universe so well). I know it's probably passe now; bear with us newcomers and help us find out the new hotness. This is important as us newcomers only have mainstream stuff to get us hooked. Now you can properly edumacate us.

So... Yep, that's it. Lurkers or those that have a passing interest in things, let this be your landing pad, and those of us who get turned on to new stuff, let this be our sounding board for reactions, good or ill.

Thanks for letting me be a part of things and please... go gentle.

I think you should check out Ergo Proxy and Darker than Black. Let me know if you enjoyed them!

what? noob? who's a N00B? cyberpunk eh sam? one more whimsical question?

Check out .hack (dot hack) - it's not quite cyberpunk but it deals intimately with gaming (an mmorpg to be exact)

hope you like it!

Start with the shorter series. You can always hop on the Bleach, Naruto, One Piece, Detective Conan or whatever bandwagon later- Theyre already so far into it that waiting a couple of months to start them wont hurt you much. Or, Alternatively, watch 5-10 episodes or read 5-10 chapters of each and if you like it, stick with it.

However, I recommend that you start with a shorter series. Some series only have 20-something episodes and some even only have six like Fooly Cooly(FLCL). Start with the shorter ones. The current phenomenon in the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, which may even appeal to your taste is Sci-Fi just a LITTLE bit. In short, start with the shorter series, love some of them, then hop onto the bandwagon of the series that have been ongoing for like 10 years.

Man you must have been bored last night!

Yeah, I've said it before and I'll say it again: I don't know crap about anime! I have been getting into since, ya know, I'm on a podcast, but I still don't know more than a few studio names.

You know, so when I tell Sasha "I have no idea what you just said", I mean it... usually.

Cowboy Bebop is still my favorite series ever. Second would be Ghost in the Shell as dubbed by Conan O'Brien and Andy Richter. Seriously, it is an epic dub!

Code Geass is very awesome and dramatic and full of killing and sci-fi. Enough said.
