As an introduction, the name is what it implies: I'm a mom to a preschooler and a stepmom to two teenagers. And I like watching anime -- I share this love with my teenagers, so it's my special connection with them.
Now for my question: do you have a anime that has become a favorite just from how much it has affected you in some way, shape, or form?
For me, I have two animes that are my favorites for that reason: "Madoka Magica" and "Evangelion." Both of them are genre deconstruction shows, which is a total coincidence. But they affected me for different reasons.
"Madoka" made a strong impression with me, I think, because of the character of Kyubey and his motives for why he did what he did. I just felt so bad for these female characters and what they had to go through, so I was happy with how the series ended. It actually inspired some fan art out of me, where I found creative ways to get rid of Kyubey. And I don't really draw!
"Eva" is somewhat different. Each character has something "broken" with them, most of them some kind of parental issue. I've had my share of parental issues in the past with my mom (of which we now get along since she is my lone parent since my father passed away), but I've also been in that deep depression in my life where I didn't know if I was good enough or if anything that I did was good enough. So I could identify with these characters on that level.
So what about you?
I'd say most anime that I watch has some kind of affect on me, but the ones that had the strongest affect are probably:
Code Geass - because it was one of the first anime series I ever got into. The characters all had an interesting connection to one another, and you could understand why Lelouch was doing what he did, even if it was a bit mental, and likely shouldn't have ever worked, you still rooted for him. It was, for me personally, the first time I'd seen a character do bad things to gain a better future. Nothing Lelouch ever did was bad for the sake of being bad, it all always made complete sense. I liked that a lot.
Fullmetal Alchemist was again one of the first shows I got into, but I always found the bond between the two brothers very moving and I love the rules in which they live by. It's tough to pinpoint just why it had such an affect on me, maybe just because it was a powerful story, maybe because the characters were so believable, I'm not sure, but it was special.
Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Certainly has had an impact on me, likely the same for everyone who's ever watched it. The kept you guessing right until the end, and again, like the two other shows I've mentioned, was very moving.
Kokoro Connect has an affect on me weekly, because I can relate to Inaba for how she thinks and feels. I enjoy watching how she deals with everything and still interacts with the group for those reasons, and I've learnt a lot of things which will likely help me out in real life.

CODE GEASS- I've never been affected by anything before but this just made me cry for real. The way Lelouch became the symbol of evil and killed himself to destroy it just made me fall in love with him. And then I realized that he did it for his sister and friends to live a peaceful life...at least that's my take on it.
DEATH NOTE- I don't know why, but I just love it when the main characters are anti-heroes. I can't really explain much except for the fact that I admire how smart Light and L is. The way they manipulated everyone around them to defeat each other. Also I learned that everyone has their own kind of justice. It also showed the twisted sides of humans. Light and Lelouch are a bit similar to each other.
DURARARA!- OK, it seems that I like Animes that are prety serious. Now this is one of the Animes that I really love. I love how they manipulate each other to achieve their goals. It's funny how Mikado, Anri and Kida are best friends and they're the leader of their respective gangs and yet they hid that from each other to protect, well, each other. And also I'm in love with Izaya~ like, I really idolize him (I'm serious. I'm not fangirling over him-- ok maybe I am, but I really admire him.)
HETALIA- Hmm...ok this is different from above. It's less serious and more funny. This is the one anime that affectd me the most. When I watched this, I guess it awakened my nationalism. That and I developed an interest in History, Geography and different languages. It helped me in tests and motivated me to learn. It also opened my eyes that even though the wars from the pasts are horrible, it helped shaped this world I live in now...
I guess that's pretty much it....there are more of course but these are my top four...
