The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya

Because this anime needs a thread, of course.

So! Feelings about the series/characters/just about anything could go here! Only thing I might warn about is possible spoilers for the new season, of which two episodes are out now (yay!)

So, I'll start with that. Anybody watched Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody or Endless Eight? I personally loved the little revalations that came along with Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody, and little Haruhi is the most terrifyingly adorable thing ever.

Also, Haruhi/Kyon (it's totally that order) is definitely one of my OTPs. I love their relationship. XD Just their dynamic and interactions; everything about it never fails to make me smile. Or grin.

Discuss this and more?

Did you know there was a video game released based on this anime for the PlayStation 2 in 2008. It's called, 'The Perplexity of Haruhi Suzumiya.' It was rated the 95th best selling game in Japan at the time.

Haruhi is a great show. I only have the same complaint as everyone else: the episode order. I really enjoyed the series as a whole and found it to be a refreshing change from all the status quo highschool-placed animes out there.

Oh no, I know exactly what you mean. It is a series that really is stupidly raped by Westerners. I mean, I know the Hare Hare Yukai. A lot of my friends do too. But we do it for FUN. Not, 'LOOK WE'RE SO AWESOME WE KNOW THIS AND YOU DON'T YOU FAIL'.

I really value Haruhi as a character, and I do plan on cosplayer her someday. But I absolutely will not be one of 'those' cosplayers of her. :/ See, I actually tend to avoid talking that much about series I love EXCEPT with close friends of mine... so I really avoid a lot of the stupid crazy fans that can be around a series like this.

That being said, I love your profile. D: You seriously seem like one of the people I really need to talk about anime with more often.

@kaminaSama agreed I heard there was a place to get the episodes put into chronological order...

Anybody know where I can find that?

@maria

Nice! I'd play it if I could. I know there's a Wii game out for it too.

@KaminaSama

Yeah, I love how it still can be a high school anime, but it's (in my opinion) much better than a lot of the high school animes out there.

@jim

Wikipedia has a list of the episodes in Kyon order, Haruhi order, and Chronological order. Here

As for watching them, you can find them at any anime site, most likely, and then just watch them in the order listed! Also, below that main list, they have a list of the new episodes and where they fit in with one of the orders of the original series.

I would go with the order for whichever character that Matches up closest to chronological. I think it's Kyon.

I was watching a clip, I think its the Bamboo leaf rhapsody mentioned above, but I also heard it was the first episode of season 2. Is it finally out?

@KaminaSama

Yup, Bamboo Leaf Rhapsody is the first new episode of Season Two. Endless Eight is the second one that's out. They're rebroadcasting it in Japan, but they've played... I think 10 of 14 of the first season, so there should be a big slew of the new episodes. They broadcast Fridays in Japan.

Praise the Lord. I'll watch the next one later today. It seems pretty plot-less, but it's Haruhi, right? XD

I'm frowning at your profile because I'm a dork. XD It's me being weird with using internet expressions, don't mind me. Honestly, I'm totally game, because even in my close circle of friends I don't have as many people to discuss things with. Do you happen to have an AIM/MSN or anything? Ah, and I do count those days sometimes, considering my continuing love for Pokemon/Digimon and the like.

Exactly. I mean, you can start up a conversation about ANY relatively popular series with anyone, but it's how your talking about it and the content you're discussing that really shows people's ability to have an intelligent discussion about something. I'll admit, I said it in my first post, I love Haruhi/Kyon. But, I love it for reasons, and can explain those reasons without screaming in retarted fangirl glee or screech. It's how you express yourself that really can matter with conversations like this. It reminds me of my dislike for most yaoi fangirls. Because people (fangirls in particular) don't look at relationships for relationships. It's OMGBUTTSEX HE'S SO SEXY and stuff like that. Honestly, while I do like yaoi (I also like yuri and het, so it's not like I'm focused on that) I have grown sick of it. Because EVERYTHING is about yaoi. What about a show like Haruhi, for example, where the main power couple (or at least one of the best ones, in my opinion) is het? Despite that, you STILL have fangirls screaming about Itsuki/Kyon. (Here, to prove a point, I show you this picture. http://pics.livejournal.com/foxkaiya/pic/0003kyqd read what I wrote in the search bar, and tell me this doesn't just prove what I said. PHOTOBUCKET IS DOING IT WRONG.)

Also, I agree with you about the fans who are completely unaware about the second season. I did find out about Haruhi after it was dubbed, but I found out very quickly they were making a second season, and have watched all of the new episodes for season two that have come out. (Well, except the newest one, but I'm getting to that.) If you like and respect a series, I don't think you should be ignorant about it. Even if people aren't watching the second season, they should at least be aware that it's coming out in Japan. And yes, I do agree. Bothering after that sort of thing is really irritating.

Hetalia. I just need to let out an ARGH at that one. I'm a fan of Ouran, but I also have read the manga and enjoy that much more than the anime. Hetalia, while I admit I haven't given it a chance yet, frankly, scares the crap out of me. Again, I feel like it's a series where EVERYONE IS GAY, OF COURSE and to be honest, the idea of shipping countries really squicks me. :/ Though I have no idea why, because I'm pretty tolerant of most things.

Thank you! I'll do that, when I do. Also, sorry for this being so late and an essay. XD

So we're 7 episodes into Endless Eight...and I'm thankful Guyver didn't spoil anything.

After watching the latest ep. of the new season last night, a prediction of sorts kind of hit me in relation to this whole cycle of the directors screwing with the Haruhi fanbase.

Endless Eight's cycle could very well end on the eighth loop

How did I come to this theory? Well, it's from two obvious patterns I've noticed:

  • Endless Eight takes place in August, the 8th month of the year
  • 8 is an endless number that when turned on its side forms the symbol for infinity
  • What's really ridiculous about this whole "playful" tactic is that the creators seem to think that the Haruhi fanbase needs a hook to keep people watching. Endless Eight being that hook. I really can't believe they have blown so much money and time on recreating the same episode with a few feints thrown in them.

    Might I add that the animation in the 6th version of Endless Eight was absolutely atrocious compared with what KyoAni usually produces. I'm too lazy to check but it seems like they have been playing around with directors and maybe even alternating internal animation teams.

    I also really want to know how the seiyuu are feeling, having to deliver starkly similar lines with rightful energy and enunciation each time around to keep it interesting. Anyway, with all these references to "eight", 8 episodes does seem like the right place to break the cycle.

    Agree? Disagree?

    I really had to drag myself to the post box to write something in this topic...

    In all honesty, Western fandom has absolutely raped TMHS for me. I was a HUUUUGE fan during its initial airing before it ever hit the West. I even encouraged my Japanese friend that I made WHILE LIVING IN JAPAN to watch one episode with me. The concept was dramatically different. The animation was unparalleled for a school-life fantasy anime. The OSTs were worth buying. The character lineup was almost typical, but over-the-top enough to make them lovable and iconic (yes, I'm looking at you Mikuru). I actually had no problem with the non-chronological order, as that, to me, added to the quirkiness that the series already expounded upon. Everyone who bitched about it just can't adjust to something different, even when the series itself is that something.

    But now, it's like if you don't know Hare Hare Yukai, you're the biggest f-ing loser on the planet because Western fandom is so ridiculously elitist and clique-oriented, how ever we try to ignore that fact by acting like "one of us." I wish there would be more cosplayers of Haruhi who were actually passionate about the character rather than passionate about getting attention as the lead and dancing to a song everyone has heard enough of. I couldn't even dig into my anime otaku nature and buy the DVDs because the series had become this tarnished, "hey-look-everyone-is-doing-it" entity I no longer pined after.

    When the 2nd season was announced, I really didn't gush one bit. I decided I would watch it if I could get my hands on it. So far, I've only been able to get the 1st one that I half-saw aired in Japan streamed through a website. I was blown away by the twist that Yuki posed to Kyon and Mikuru regarding their time traveling. I do want to see more, but it seems they are not airing the episodes consecutively. I'd honestly appreciate it if someone would share when they are released just in case I don't happen upon it myself.

    Aaaaand, that is my passionate rant regarding a series that has lost its glimmer for me. And I do like my "shiny things" just like the rest of you.

    @FoxKaiya

    Firstly, thank you for the compliment on my profile, though why are you frowning? =] I've been looking for someone who I can really sit down and discuss anime with. I have my best friend, but he's not nearly as "plugged in" as I am with a variety of different series. If you're game, so am I, as you've been an anime otaku for longer than me if you don't count my obsessive DBZ/Gundam Wing/Sailor Moon watching before I found out that it was anime.

    Back on topic, I really want to hone in on your statement about not talking to people about a serious you really love except with close friends. TMHS is truly one of those series that you can talk about with ALMOST anyone. However, MOST of the people you can talk to about it are just like "OMG HARUHIXKYON THEY SO KAWAII LULZ!" ...::clears throat:: which really makes me irritated. What's even more irritating is that the fans who are still gushing over the first season probably have no idea that the 2nd season has begun. This automatically puts them in the category of Western fandom limitation - they're not a true fan until those around them become fans. This then cascades down through the anime ages until no one is a fan and everyone has found bigger or better things. That makes me not want to bother even more, as I'm sure you can agree.

    Though I think TMHS will be a long-runner among Westerners like Naruto and Bleach have been, one could say the same about the already gradual fazing out of Ouran High School Host Club in favor of the much larger boy-cast of Axis Powers Hetalia. To that, I gracefully facepalm, Kyon-style.

    Also glad you're serious about your affection for the character of Haruhi, not just the icon that she has become. When you do cosplay as her, be sure to post a pic. =]
